I don’t get it. Does this have something to do with the phrase “break a leg”?
Yes, a horse breaking a leg is a tragic thing. They have to be put down when that happens.
Breaking a leg is basically fatal for equines due to their evolution. Their bodies essentially cannot recover from such an injury no matter how much surgical skill is involved, so death is more of a mercy thing.
Well, in Germany we sag “Break you neck and a leg”, so the sensibilities seem to be slightly different. 😀
