What’s funny is that this is actually a thing that happens in evolution, insects and their bird predators timing their hatching and mating to try to either avoid or catch the other.
Global warming though is going to shift the balance towards the early-birds, since in a warmer climate the insects will hatch earlier, and so the birds will have to start mating earlier in order to catch the briefly bountiful bugs for their hatchlings.
I remember a Reader’s Digest joke where “grampa” tells this proverb to his grandkid who wanted to stay awake the whole night. Then the kid, thinking himself smart, asks the elder “But isn’t the worm stupid for waking up so early?”
To which the senior replies: “Kiddo, you’re wrong. The worm has not got up early… it was still going home after staying awake the whole night!”
Nightcrawler means worm; the late worm is what the early bird eats!
