Actually, there are two interpretations on why Hope was in the box as well.
1. To somewhat ease the suffering caused by all the evils and miseries.
2. Because Hope is also a horrible thing. When it lies to us and our expectations are deceived, we suffer.
That first panel looks to me like a menagerie of monsters has all been hung above the box, rather than they’re all flying out of the box.
@Martin – Hmm I didn’t get that impression. The context of Pandora’s Box, and the curved lines indicating movement, made sense to me.
