Pretty sure in the actual fable the race was to see who would warn the Forrest in the case of a fire. The tortoise won and was named the fire warner dude. Then when there was a fire everyone died.
Whenever I hear the Tortoise and the Hare story I keep imagining the Tortoise at the finish line celebrating and behind a nearby tree a different Tortoise in a trenchcoat is discretely handing a big wad of cash to the Hare and saying, “Tough break ‘Falling Asleep’ back there. Better luck next time.”
I saw a video of someone actually trying to race a tortoise and hare. It was just ten feet, but the tortoise still won!
