Perhaps (and hopefully) No Man’s Sky will do something differently, but so far the concept of “vast procedural worlds to explore” in games did mostly result in worlds that are different but equally unexciting once you get over the novelty of staring at the everchanging sets of creatures and landscapes.
I think Starbound’ developers are currently steering their game in a more or less right direction by working on both “colonization options” (building towns for NPCs and whatnot) and making combat more interesting (for those not interested in building). A little late, of course, but better than never.
