Mystery solved
This comic was inspired by the drawings of an eleven year old. My wife’s aunt, a sixth grade english teacher, had her students draw fantasy situations and their reactions to them. Even with all the originality of most the drawings, this one of a boy who discovers he can talk to animals stood head and shoulders above the rest. When my wife and I first read it, our minds were positively blown.
I always assumed it was the egg…because the very first chicken came from an egg, at first, but its parents were not-quite-chickens.
Well, that settles that. xD

Basically all animals came from eggs, so eggs were on the scene far longer than chickens. Hell, longer than creatures that didn’t live in water.
